Bita Riazati

My name is Bita, and my journey into psychoanalysis and clinical psychology began over 11 years ago. Through the personal experience of loss and talking to a psychoanalyst, I became fascinated by the possibility that in a private session, one can find relief and work through issues to achieve freedom from the powerful forces that dominate one's life. For many, loss may manifest as the death of a loved one, a parent, a child, or even a pet. For others, it may represent the loss of one's homeland through migration-like experiences. Even those of us who move between states in Australia or relocate to different houses can experience a similar effect of loss, shaped by the way the unconscious is structured like a language (as Jacques Lacan describes) around desire. When loss is not mourned properly, it can have profound effects, leading to various disorders and difficulties.

In my former career, I worked as a designer and project consultant. I found my sublimations in painting, the arts, writing, listening to music, and making podcasts, and I also worked in community radio. About 12 years ago, I began my concurrent studies in clinical psychology and psychoanalysis while also undergoing my own analysis, attending four or more sessions a week. My aim is to take my analysis to its absolute end point, as discussed by the French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan and elaborated upon by the school to which I subscribe (I am a member of the Lacanian Forums - Colorado). I am currently working with a Lacanian psychoanalyst from the school of psychoanalysis (IF-EPFCL) in Paris.

My Practice, Desire and Professional Experience

My practice, based here in Melbourne, has taken me through a range of settings, from public health services, addiction clinics and primary schools to private practice - where I've worked with patients facing complex and often deeply troubling difficulties and trauma.Whether in a private session or a group session, my aim is to create a reflective space where my patients and supervisees can work through issues without preconceived judgment, which is why I also attend my own case supervision sessions.

I've been fortunate to share my work at conferences through papers and presentations on topics like identity, ethics, culture, migration, and anxiety. These topics reflect my interest in the intersection between subjectivity and society; our experiences are not isolated, and I believe this broader lens adds richness to the work I do with each person who walks into my practice. My engagement with professional communities, such as Lacan/ UK and the Colorado Analytic Forum, offers me the chance to keep learning and connecting with others who share my commitment to advancing the field of psychoanalysis.
