The clinical theory that guides my practice

I am a registered psychologist and a Lacanian psychoanalyst in Melbourne. As a psychologist, I have previously trained in a range of therapies such as CBT, mindfulness and ACT, family systems and DBT. Therefore I am familiar with a range of therapies as well as their limitations for some people.

Other than my training in cognitive behavioural therapies, I have committed to further clinical training in psychoanalytic therapy / psychoanalysis. Such as years of personal psychoanalysis with my own psychoanalyst, peer consultations, ongoing theoretical and clinical studies, as well as ongoing clinical supervision in psychoanalytic treatment. This is a life long commitment to the ethics that sustain my clinical work.

Psychoanalytic treatments work with developing an understanding of the person and the contributions of their history in the present time. The psychoanalyst or therapist who has had his or her own psychoanalysis directs the treatment by listening and working with the person to work through the issues that present in the therapeutic relationship or in the transference.

Jacques Lacan was a French psychiatrist and psychoanalyst whose work advanced on the theory and practice of Sigmund Freud, the inventor of psychoanalysis. Treatment and what can be offered depends on each person’s level of engagement with what is offered. I may combine cognitive, solution-focused and psychoanalytic strategies in the work with patients suffering from anxiety, depression and a wide range of issues and disorders. What is psychoanalysis? Psychoanalysis is a scientific research field and a highly specialised clinically applied treatment method, specially useful for treating people suffering from enduring and persistent problems.

Psychoanalysis or psychoanalytic treatments in general have particular regard for the individuality of each person, focusing on the subjective experience of a symptom or problem. Chronic problems are distressing for people and repeat in different situations, which naturally repeat at some point in the analytic situation too. These moments present opportunities to intervene and for us to work through resistance and difficulties during your sessions. We may also explore solutions to certain issues where possible.

How we work in psychoanalytic therapy

In treatment, the person is invited to speak freely in an uncensored way. The therapist who has his or her own psychoanalysis is enabled to listen using a particular mode of listening called the ‘free-floating’ or ‘evenly suspended attention’. This mode of listening is applied to the person’s thoughts and associations in order to guide the treatment.

My psychoanalytic listening, training and understanding enables me to listen to the person’s expressed associations, accounts of events, thoughts and feelings in this particular way. This may create the possibility to work and engage the person’s unconscious desire over the course of our work together. Over the course of the treatment we may learn what may drive someone’s actions in their daily lives, relationships, career and engagements with a variety of situations. Together we work to facilitate the emergence and development of the person’s creative capacity to solve problems or make decisions. It may be hindered by pathological processes, further effected by difficult, painful, or traumatic life circumstances.

The analyst listens to what the person has to say, over and above any preconceived knowledge or ideas that the analyst may have about the person’s experiences, circumstances, or history. It is a very personal session where the beneficial effects of speaking and being heard are given time to develop. Psychoanalytic treatments can be very effective in working through experiences that are difficult to understand, or prone to being misunderstood by friends, family, or colleagues.

Treatment of enduring, persistent or severe psychological problems

Research (such as Leichsenring et al., 2013) has shown that for many patients with complex presentations, including chronic issues and personality problems, brief psychotherapy is not sufficient. Furthermore, many meta-analyses (such as Leichsenring et al., 2005) investigating treatment efficacy and rate of relapse across hundreds of longitudinal studies, have demonstrated that purely behaviour-based therapies may offer temporary symptom relief with a high rate of relapse for enduring, persistent or chronic problems and disorders.

I may combine a range of cognitive, solution-focused and psychodynamic / psychoanalytic treatment strategies depending on individual needs. Psychoanalysis or applying aspects of psychoanalytic techniques may be used in the treatment of those suffering from treatment resistant depression, personality disorders, intimacy and relationship problems, reoccurring psychological conflicts, somatic problems, severe anxiety disorders and neurotic or psychotic problems.

The Department of Heath (factsheet) and the Victorian Statewide Centre of Clinical Excellence for Personality Disorders provide an overview. There are many scientific sources on Lacan or clinical psychoanalysis / psychodynamic therapy which you can refer to inform yourself.

Psychoanalysis is a treatment method, which is practical in the sense that there is an attempt to answer a question, to solve a problem, or to cure somebody, or at least to address one’s suffering. But the other thing that psychoanalysis does is to enable somebody to speak. It is an attempt to create the conditions in which somebody can speak themselves as fully as possible.
