MENTAL HEALTH CARE PLAN
I am not a bulk-billing psychologist and like most psychologists and specialists I charge a gap. A GP referral is not necessary for attending psychology appointments. However, under a GP mental health care plan you are eligible for 6-10 rebated psychology consultations per calendar year that goes towards the treatment of a diagnosed mental health condition. Patients often attend treatment with me on a longer term basis. You can obtain a mental health care plan and referral letter for your rebate after you have attended a session with me to discuss your presenting issues.
If you want to use Medicare, other than a mental health care plan, you also need a referral letter and your GP needs to specify your diagnosis and the number of approved sessions (a maximum of 6) in the letter. It is not necessary to obtain a referral letter to have appointments with a psychologist. An example of a valid and medicare compliant referral letter >
In terms of the medicare rebates, the first referral letter approves funding for 6 sessions, and then you can see your GP for another referral letter for 4 sessions (10 in total). You will receive your rebate via the Medicare App and the receipt that I provide to you. It is important to remember that there is no limit set on the number of sessions that you can attend with a psychologist. The treatment of most chronic mental health concerns or issues require a long term personal commitment.
TREATMENT PROCESS FOR CHRONIC AND PERSISTENT PROBLEMS
Most patients stay in treatment with me for longer than the 6-10 funded Medicare sessions, and sessions are on a weekly basis. It is important to remember that the number of Medicare funded sessions is not based on any scientific or clinical evidence. Therefore, the frequency and length of the treatment is usually determined based on my assessment and understanding of your problem and needs.
